Six trades, one person doing them. Most weeks it is partitions and doors; the rest follows because the same house usually needs it.
Studwork & dry lining12.5mm boardMetal or timber partitions framed, boarded and taped so the decorator finds a flat wall. Most of my week.
Fire doorsFD30 · 3mm gapFD30 door sets fitted to the gaps, seals and ironmongery the certificate actually requires. Landlords and HMOs included.
Door hanging3 hingesA run of internal doors that all shut with the same weight, in houses where no two openings are square.
Carpentryscribed, not filledSkirting, architrave, staircase repairs and fitted storage, cut on site to the wall you have rather than the wall it should be.- NEEDED — a finished bathroomTilingtanked firstBathrooms and wet rooms set out from the eye line down, so the cut tiles end up where nobody looks.
Flooringlevelled to 2mmLVT and laminate over a subfloor that has been levelled first. A 2mm dip in a screed telegraphs straight through LVT within a year.
How a job goes
Five steps, and you know where you stand at each one. Most of what people worry about with a tradesman happens in the gaps between them, so I keep the gaps short.
- 01You ring or send the formTell me the room and roughly what you want. I will say straight away whether it is a job for me.
- 02I come and measureUsually within a week. Half an hour in the room, and I tell you what I would do and what I would leave alone.
- 03The quote arrives in writingItemised, by email, within two days. The price does not move unless you change the job.
- 04We book a dateA start date and a realistic finish date, not a vague week. If something slips you hear it from me first.
- 05It is finished and cleared upDust sheets down every day, floors swept, waste taken away. You get the room back, not a tidy-up job.
